F1 2022 Driver Ratings: WineMixer Edition

EA dropped their Driver ratings for the launch of the F1 22 game this week. Compared to the OTHER CONTRAVASSY of the week, the kerfuffle over driver ratings on a computer game seem flaccid.

Being the knowledge authoritative figures we are when it comes to driver performance, we felt obliged to compile our own list with completely objective, not-at-all inflammatory, and definitely not looking for clicks, driver ratings.

Enjoy!

Verstappen 94 – What else can he do? He’s more disciplined at the wheel, he’s consistent, he’s done it when not having the best car on the grid and now that he does, Max is cashing it in and leading in points comfortably. He’s not my fave, but it’s getting harder to say he’s not the best driver on the grid

Leclerc 92 – Charles has exceeded his expectations every season under every team he has driven for. Master of Saturday with a car that is not the best on the grid. If you need 1 lap, Leclerc will beat anyone

Russell 91 – the driver formerly known as ‘Mr Saturday,’ GR has gotten the better of his 7x Champion teammate Lewis Hamilton this season. My dude was making Q3 semi-regularly in Williams #Latifiwouldnever.

Vettel 91 – Honestly, Vettel right now is delivering above expectation more than any driver on the grid. The Vet is savvy and continues to dice up the midfield in better cars

Hamilton 89 – Pour one out for Sir Lewis who’s biggest problem may be all the prior success he had. And I mean, I get it, if you’re a fashion icon that routinely rubs shoulders with the likes of Drake, Rhianna, and whoever the newest Kardashian-adjacent celeb is + Roscoe?

Perez 89 – The Mexican has found something this year, upping his performance in both quali and race day. Probably the front-runner to finish second in the title, AND you need a #2 driver that can block? Perez is the Mike Alstott of the grid

Alonso 86 – To clarify, 86 is his driver rating not how many years he’s been in F1. My dude still has it, the man I ran into at Coachella and was horrified that someone recognized him has surprised some capital J’s, not this middle case j

Norris 85 – Lando is lucky he has some driver karma points stored up, he and McLaren have not made it easy to remember how semi-successful the team was last season. But like someone wise once said, ‘mostly dead is still slightly alive’

Bottas 84 – EA needs to calm down with the 88. Bottas and his bottom has done well this season, but let’s not forget he was the usual absent party of the HAM-BOT-VER era.. in the best car

Albon 82 – What is dead may never die. Like Russell before him, Albon is getting some results in spite of driving what I think is essentially the demo car F1 brought around when they revealed the 2022 regulations

Tsunoda 81 – Trading his expletives for experience, Tsunoda has taken a step up this season. Save a few DNF’s not his fault, and that cringy pit exit at Canada which I am choosing to ignore, the short King is blossoming into a threat for bigger and better seats

Gasly 79 – Sorry bro, you just keep disappearing on Sunday’s and the Senior team just opted to keep a guy that they brought in off the street last season rather than bring you back

Sainz 77 – Maybe focus on the role the team wants you to play, then better results will come. EA’s 87 is a clear sign they are being influenced by Big Red

KMags 75 – For a few seasons now, KMags has been that Mendoza line driver once occupied by Nico Hulkenberg, or Barrichello. If you finish ahead of KMags, you’re in the right place. If behind… I hear a lot of WEC teams need drivers

Ricciardo 74 – #sadbadger I miss shoey’s. This could quickly go up but his form has just not been the same since leaving Big Taurine. That smile is still 100 though, and there’s always Childress Racing

Zhou 72 – Maybe premature, he scored in his first race, has done OK, just have not seen too much of Zhou and he was noticeably behind Bottas in a few races at the start of the season

Stroll 69 – I mean, just watch the start of the 2021 Hungarian GP

Ocon 68 – Not going to lie, I kind of forgot about Ocon, so for that he gets -5 points from where he probably belongs. Plus he crashes A LOT and Perez Stans never forget

Mick 66 – This hurts me more than it hurts you. You’re doing fine sweetie, but maybe let’s go with Ferrari Hypercar program? Mick can still be a legend, just not with HAAS aka the meme factory on wheels

Latifi 59 – Sadly there’s no bonus points remaining for being a nice guy because Vettel has ridden his rainbow bicycle around and taken all the nice guy points

So there it is, how’d we do? What’s your Driver score? Give me a month of karting and a month in simulator, I think I would be a solid 33.

Silverstone GP week, more to come!

Formula 1 Reflections

Been feeling a bit nostalgic lately. Cannot pin down exactly why. Was it because F1 just went to Canada for the first time sine 2019 and we were bombarded with ‘Wall of Champions’ anecdote’s? Could be. Am I trying to remember simpler times when I was not a Draft Kings GPP Tournament winner? Probably not since the modest pot was shared with 180 others who’s chalky lineup did just as well as mine.

Maybe it’s because the ‘Memba berries episode just came up on my 3rd South Park rewatch and it got me thinking about Ferrari’s outlook going into the season…

Last weekend’s event for the boys in Red was another one to forget. The highlight of the weekend was the wet Saturday Qualifying that threw a randomizer in the a-typical grid order. Max V assumed his not-so-normal position of P1, but Alonso shocked the paddock throwing his Alpine on the front row. It was the first time the Spaniard had started on the front row since 2012.

We also had an all HAAS row 3 for the 3rand, Perez out in Q2, AND Mr. Saturday out-qualified by his washed 7-time champion teammate. Go home Canada Quali, you are drunk.

Leclerc and Tsunoda took grid penalties for Power Unit replacements lining up P19 and P20 respectively for the race. I can’t speak for the rest of the Tifosi, but the thought of Leclerc charging through the field on Sunday wet my cannoli.

At lights out, the Alonso could not make good on his promise to pass Verstappen into the first corner and eventually lost 2nd to fellow Spaniard Sainz on lap 3.

Perez’s weekend quickly went from bad to worse on lap 8 when his car lost power and got stuck in gear, ending his race.

Verstappen dove for new tires during the VSC while Sainz stayed out taking the lead of the race.

After the race went green again, Leclerc continued his charge up the pack and was P7 by lap 21 behind the Alpine of Esteban Ocon. The Renault powered Alpine has proven to be nasty on long straights and Ocon put the nastiness on full display stalling Leclerc’s progress. After it was clear there would be no podium for Ferrari’s number 1, the buffones in the garage brought Leclerc in for new tires and hopefully clear track. A delayed pit put Leclerc behind the midfield jumble of Strohl-Zhou-Tsunoda-Ricciardo.

Not to be outdone by Ferrari’s botched pitstop, Tsunoda put his Alpha Tauri into the tires exiting the pits on lap 47. Not as embarrassing or cringy as his fart joke scenes on Drive to Survive, but not a good look.

The Safety Car bunched up the grid and set up a battle between Sainz and Verstappen for top spot. Sainz on fresher tires evened the fight between him and Verstappen who had dominated the entire weekend.

Painfully for Cucklos Sainz who remained in DRS range for the majority of the final laps of the race, he could not match the Red Bull of Verstappen’s pace down the straights. It is the 5th time Carlos has finished runner up in a Grand Prix which has to be absolutely brutal. Lewis Hamilton wrapped up a solid weekend taking 3rd spot on the podium ahead of his teammate George Russell.

Leclerc salvaged P5 from starting 19th. I think if he were offered P5 at the start of the race he would have taken it, but with the VSC and Safety Car affecting the race, a podium was in the cards for Leclerc, if not an outright win. No way he would have not at least attempted a pass on Verstappen.

The trio of Saturday stand-outs Alonso, Schumacher and Magnussen turned in a Sunday of suck. Both HAAS cars had issues with Mick’s race ending early due to a technical failure, and KMags being DFL at the flag. Alonso took the flag in P7 but was given a 5-second penalty for blocking Valterri Bottas on the final lap, dropping him to P9.

6 wins in a row now for Red Bull Racing, and ‘it’s giving 2011 RBR,’ as the Zoomers say.

Silverstone is up next, and the racing is expected to be spicy!

Are Ferrari Fans are Ready to be Hurt Again?

To say the Tifosi are down bad is an understatement. Even in this economy. The Italian team had a double DNF in Baku achieving the worst possible outcome. Their title competitors at Red Bull took a comfortable 1-2 stretching their lead in the Drivers and Constructors battle to 34 and 80 points respectively.

Here’s an SAT equivalent for Ferrari. Monaco is to Yakety Sax like Baku is to _____?

I’m going with sad trombone.

Ultimately there were 4 DNF’s in Ferrari engined cars with Ganyou Zhou and Kevin Magnussen not making it to the end of the race. This is not fine.

Elsewhere, Grandpa Hamilton finished fourth just behind his teammate Consistent George. The points haul for Mercedes puts them in striking distance of Ferrari. That is if Mercedes can resolve their bouncing issues and keep Lewis and George out of the Chiropractor.

Speaking of bouncing, the Honey Badger bounced back taking 8th and finishing ahead of Lando. McLaren clearly is favoring their younger driver and sacrificed Danny Ric’s strategy who probably could have given Alonso a run for 7th had he been put on the optimum strategy. I just want one more shoey before he signs with Richard Childress Racing.

Gasly, Alonso, and Vettel all produced and showed well. Especially Vettel who passed Ocon, overshot his braking spot and executed the most perf 180 spin to recover. This is me not mentioning the part where he almost took out Yuki when he rejoined the track.

Let’s play a game, would you rather…

Vettel or Ricciardo?

Vettel or Yuki?

Vettel or Alonso?

Vettel or Bottas?

Vettel or Sainz?

Vettel or Gasly?

Vettel or Hamilton? *gasp

Vettel or Perez?

I think that’s where I stop. For me, right now as far talent goes, it’s Leclerc (don’t @me), Max, Russel, Lando, Perez, and 34 year old Vettel and his rainbow bicycle.

Happy Pride Month indeed.

This is probably the most challenging back to back on the calendar. I feel like the hardo that designs the Spartan races tracks that will have you crawling on dusty gravel right before a wide circumference monkey bar obstacle set-up the Azerbaijan/Montreal back to back. I suppose the tracks are not too dissimilar but it has to be absolutely BRUTAL for the teams and Drivers to go from what I guess is Eastern Europe? To Canada in one week.

Bouncing is going to continue to be a problem especially for Mercedes and Ferrari. I set the over/under on Hamilton’s strained radio messages at 55.5.

Montreal is notoriously tough on brakes and former champions. Think we’re going to have a chaotic one. And you know what they say? “Chaos is a bitch.”

Bet’s time!!!

Underdog was aggressive in Baku when they set Alonso’s line (6.5) after he did well in practice. The Spaniard made it to Q3 but was nowhere near his line qualifying 10th. I was hesitant to bet overs on Alonso after where he was in the practice sessions. I predicted a line of 8.5 ahead of practice. This signals to me if we see a significant variance from an expected line to an actual line as a result of an outlier performance in practice, it might be an opportunity to take overs on that driver.

I am going to keep hammering Perez, Vettel, Leclerc, and Latifi under’s until they stop hitting. Ricciardo and Hamilton could be sneaky good depending on where their lines land this weekend.

This is the part where I say I will not be betting Mick Schumacher lines because I want nothing but the best for him in life. So I am going to say something nice about Mick Schumacher. Mick finished ahead of his teammate in Baku, his car did not explode, and he has really nice hair.

Going to look to target over’s on Ferrari engined cars without Leclerc or Mick in the seat, Stroll who likes crashing, and Ocon… because I needed 3 drivers to complete this sentence.

Draft Kings

Who has 2 thumbs and fielded the optimum lineup in 3 tournaments for the Azerbaijan GP? This guy!!! (and 180 others…). Sharing a jackpot with 180 others is giving me flashbacks to relationships in my 20’s.

Anywho, my strat this week. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT, play Ferrari as your Constructor. Unless you are a tourney bro sicko looking for a low-ownership edge. Here is this week’s pricing.

This is the first race where DK algo’s priced George Russell ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Sir Lewis, has won 7 Canadian GP’s including 4 of the last 5 races in Montreal. Lewey won his first race here and for his efforts, has been named an honorary Mountie AND has free Tim Horton’s for life. Don’t fact check that.

Point is, if Lewis is going to get right, bad back and all, it’s going to happen here. I will be heavy on Lewis in lineups this week and Mercedes as part of my Ferrari avoidance plan.

Going to keep eating the chalk with Vettel who also loves this track and just keeps delivering. Really enjoying his enjoyment of racing again.

A resurgent Ricciardo is inviting compared to his teammate who does not have much experience in Montreal. Ricciardo finished 3rd in 2018 in Canada for Red Bull and best of the rest 6th place for Renault in 2019.

Interesting note, the last 3 Canadian GP’s have not been great for Alpha Tauri (formerly Toro Rosso). One of their drivers have been involved in a lap 1 incident in each of the last 3 races. Of course this probably means nothing unless you think the simulation is getting lazy with its programming for race narratives.

Canada is both Stroll’s and Latifi’s home track. I think this bodes well for Latifi to at least finish the race and negatively for Stroll who is not the greatest when under pressure.

I think the macro strategy is to be heavy on Red Bull lineups with Mercedes in the Constructors as the chaos play’s. The race in Montreal usually produces accidents and safety cars, so there should be some values in playing lower-owned #2 drivers because of Draft Kings scoring system giving +5 points for finishing ahead of teammate.

Forecast looks like rain on Friday and Saturday, if qualifying is affected by rain, there is going to be a real advantage for those putting out lineups that know the sport.

Ferrari’s Fiasco and Baku Betting

Ah yes, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Another weekend to put aside that part of our brain that wants basic human rights to be to be permitted to citizens hosting a GP and focus on the real problems facing the sport. Like flashy jewelry and Drivers that want to grow their #brand.

If you can shut that part of your brain off (yes please), this track is p-dope. Polar opposite of Monaco, this track is designed for speed, passing, and 3-wide moves down the main straight.

All the organic, classic, natural beauty of traditional Formula 1 tracks is completely absent here. What we have instead is a Brazzers-esque version of a Formula 1 track with a very forced plot and lots of gratuitous opportunity for action.

Ferrari need a dub more than Jos needs a Josthoughts.com domain. The fine Fiorano folk are coming off of two BRUTAL, absolutely brutal race weekends. Leclrec somehow lost two races where he headed into Sunday looking dominant at two of the most difficult tracks to pass! Instead, the Monaco driver had a DNF in Spain and a non-podium at his home track. And Sainz, improved and still majorly disappointed. i mean 🀌 just 🀌🀌🀌🀌🀌🀌.

And Red Bull, after stealing two races from their biggest title competitors, must be loose and carefree, right? Team Taurine have seen their choke jobs at the season’s first two races entirely negated, leading both the Drivers and Constructors. So surely it’s all roses, rainbow’s and belly flops into the Energy Station pool?

Jos would like a word

Post-race, Red Bull did the Contravassy double. Driver’s father (Jos Verstappen) chided RBR’s decision to run a strategy that got their other driver a win. How dare. AND, and said other driver partied so hard he made international news.

I mean, the FIA’s President (Ben Sulyam) comments about the future of the sport NOT becoming where Driver’s are expressive about their causes and cares for society and instead, shut up and drive like Nikki Lauda and Alain Prost, is just the off-screen fluffer of this Johnny Sins feature.

Enough of the Macro, let me sum up what else is going on

  1. Russel is the Captain now
  2. Lando is still dying except on the track
  3. Mick crashed for sympathy yet again but couldn’t even catch the car on fire
  4. Gasly performed when it mattered least
  5. Alonso invented Chadd-ing as an F1 meme
  6. Ricciardo going to NASCAR has gone mainstream

Lets talk some bets!!!

Underdog

We’ll have Qualifying lines soon enough on Underdog. I think they have been posting them about 12 hours prior to the scheduled start of qualifying. Here are my projected qualifying lines.

DISCLAIMER – THIS IS PRIOR TO ANY PRACTICE SESSIONS

I see unders value in Perez who I think is probably 50/50 for 2nd, Gasly/Stroll/Vettel who have both done well in Baku before, and Leclerc for pole again. Overs I will be targeting are Hamilton because it just keeps hitting, Bottas who is coming off a rough weekend driving a car that might not do to well on, and Latifi because it just keeps happening. Total fades of Verstappen lines, Alonso and Ocon lines because it feels like a coin flip, and Mick… If you are betting against Mick at this point you are a sicko, and if you are betting on Mick you are also a sicko.

Again- All analysis is prior to any Practice Session

Red Bull is the higher priced team but Leclerc is the highest priced driver. This should entice the GPP F1 Bro’s (of which there are dozens) to try Captain alt-Constructor plays. This should flatten ownership percentages at the top and reduce duplicate lineups.

I expect I will be heavy on Vettel, Albon, Russell and Perez. I could be buying high on Perez or result chasing since he is coming off the win in Monaco AND he won last years race at Baku. So, hoping maybe he qualifies low or the Jos-effect suppresses ownership.

Pretty much going to use Lando, Bottas, and where I can fit it George Russell, interchangeably.

Avoiding Ricciardo, Mick, and Hamilton at ALL costs.

Expect to be light on the Alpine’s, Stroll, Zhou, Latifi, Bottas and KMag’s.

I think there are a lot of ways to get creative this week. Running Mercedes as your Constructor can afford you to get one of the Alpine’s, Lando, and George Russell if you want to make a bet on full chaos lineups.

If you look closely enough, you can see Ricciardo’s chances of ever becoming World Champion fading away

Baku GP, Le Mans, and my half-birthday all in one weekend. Here’s to a safe one 🍻
